Governor Ododo Grants Kogi Workers Additional Year of Tax Relief
Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has announced the continuation of the tax holiday for the state’s workers, granting them an additional year of exemption. The Governor explained that the new tax moratorium aligns with the implementation of the national minimum wage, aiming to alleviate the economic challenges workers face. In addition to this, Ododo also extended the retirement age for health professionals in the state from 60 to 65 years, or from 35 to 40 years of service.
Ododo further pledged to improve the living standards of workers by ensuring the provision of clean water to the Comrade Onuh Edoka Labour House, benefiting both workers and the surrounding community.
During his address, the Governor praised the contributions of Kogi workers to the state’s development and emphasized that his administration remains committed to prioritizing their welfare, despite ongoing economic challenges. He reassured the workers that their demands would be addressed, though not all could be met immediately. He also reiterated his government’s ongoing focus on pensioners, education, youth, and women’s empowerment.
The Governor highlighted the success of Kogi’s state-owned universities, noting their progress in meeting international standards and their potential to produce highly competitive graduates. Additionally, Ododo revealed that his administration continues to release N105 million monthly for the gratuity of local government retirees, fulfilling promises made to the people of Kogi.
In response, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Gabriel Amari, expressed gratitude to Governor Ododo for his initiatives and urged the government to continue addressing workers’ needs. Dr. Elijah Evinemi, the State Head of Service, also acknowledged the government’s prioritization of worker welfare, calling on employees to show dedication to their work in return.
Comrade Onuh Edoka, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Labour Matters, commended Ododo for being the first to approve and implement the new national minimum wage, which has been widely praised by NLC leadership. Edoka also lauded the Governor for appointing labor leaders to key positions in his administration and assured that workers would reciprocate the Governor’s support when the time is right.
