Umahi Applauds Hi-Tech as Lagos-Calabar Highway Nears 70% Completion
Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi has commended the impressive progress made on the 700-kilometre Lagos-Calabar coastal highway, noting that over 70 percent of the project has been completed despite the construction firm, Hi-Tech, not receiving commensurate funding.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking during an inspection, Umahi praised Hi-Tech Construction for its commitment to national development, highlighting the company’s use of three construction shifts to maintain momentum. He also credited Director of Bridge and Highway Design, Bede Obioha, for accelerating work on the ambitious project.
He disclosed that major financial backers—including Deutsch Bank and the Development Bank of Southern Africa—have expressed satisfaction with the pace and scope of the work. The project, once completed, will feature integrated housing estates, commercial zones, factories, observation posts, and tolling infrastructure.
Umahi revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to commission completed sections of the road on May 29, 2025, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to large-scale infrastructure delivery.
“This project is not just about today’s needs,” Umahi said. “We’re building for the future, with embedded rail lines, carbon-efficient concrete pavements, solar-powered operations, and extensive greenery that will help earn Nigeria carbon credits.”
He also emphasized that the road will decongest urban traffic and support multi-modal transport. “The 12-meter central span is reserved for a railway, and provisions are already in place for train stations and future transport expansions,” he added.
Highlighting the complexity of Section II, Umahi explained how the team is navigating critical infrastructure like the Dangote Refinery, requiring extensive flyovers—some with spans as long as 60 meters—to accommodate industrial traffic without disruptions.
Construction has already commenced in Cross River, with plans to expand into Akwa Ibom shortly. Umahi confirmed that tolling will begin in January 2026, ensuring the project generates returns for national development.
