Speaking during the 11th Regular Zonal Executive Council meeting held in Jalingo on Friday, May 2, SSANU’s National President, Muhammad Haruna, emphasized the crucial role non-academic staff play in the university system and stressed the need for fair treatment.

Haruna applauded the TSU chapter of the union, led by Chairperson Bitrus Joseph Ajibauka, for its firm and sustained advocacy for staff welfare.

He urged Governor Agbu Kefas and other key stakeholders to take swift steps to address the lingering issues, warning that failure to do so could threaten industrial harmony and academic continuity.

“I commend the state leadership and management of the university for their role during the last standoff, but I must stress that prompt payment of all withheld entitlements is critical to averting future unrest,” Haruna said.

He also reminded SSANU members to uphold professional ethics, stating the union would not defend any member found breaching institutional rules.

Chairperson Ajibauka expressed appreciation to the government for approving partial payments and for implementing the new ₦70,000 minimum wage. However, he urged full clearance of all arrears to improve staff morale and strengthen relations between the union and university authorities.

He also outlined the union’s recent achievements, including the reinstatement of unlawfully suspended personnel, restoration of administrative functions for non-academic staff, payment of some delayed benefits, and enhancements to the salary structure.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Kefas, Deputy Chief of Staff Emmanuel Lawson reiterated the administration’s commitment to educational development. He cited the 50% reduction in tuition fees across all state-owned tertiary institutions and called for SSANU’s continued collaboration in government reform efforts.

  • Consensus Over Ego: The PRP chairman emphasized that the party’s push for a mega-coalition is driven by consensus and constitutional processes rather than forcing Duke’s candidacy through on profile strength alone.
