In a recent interview on the Bagfuel Brigade podcast, Akon highlighted his role in developing Afrobeats, revealing that he spent considerable time in Nigeria in 2008 to nurture the genre and its artists, which laid the foundation for its current global success.
“Wizkid was just a local star before we got involved,” Akon explained, adding that he was the first Nigerian artist his label signed. He also mentioned signing the famous duo, P-Square, who became the first Nigerian group to achieve international success.
Akon emphasized the lack of a business structure around Nigerian music before his involvement, claiming that he brought essential infrastructure and commercial strategies to the industry, which was vital for its growth. He added, “Afrobeats would have remained stagnant without the changes we introduced,” acknowledging that although he doesn’t take full credit, his contributions were crucial in elevating the genre.
