Soludo Clears 7-Year Gratuity, Pension Backlog, Affirms Workers’ Welfare Priority
Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo of Anambra State has disclosed that his administration has successfully cleared seven years’ worth of gratuity and pension arrears inherited from the previous government led by Chief Willie Obiano.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking at the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration held at Ekwueme Square in Awka, Soludo reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to workers’ welfare despite economic constraints. He revealed that all outstanding gratuities owed to retirees upon his assumption of office had been fully paid. In addition, he reported that pension arrears from 2018 to 2020—amounting to N14 billion—have been settled, with only the 2021 payments pending. Arrangements are already in place to address the outstanding balance, he assured.
The governor emphasized that his administration is guided by principles of transparency, accountability, and a moral obligation to improve working conditions for public servants. He stated that efforts to support the state’s workforce would continue within the limits of available resources.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Anambra, Comrade Humphrey Nwafor, commended the governor’s strides in addressing long-standing pension issues. However, he urged the state government to expedite the implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme as recommended by the Joint Committee on Pension Reform, noting its importance for sustainable retirement security.
Nwafor also called for the payment of outstanding allowances owed to non-teaching staff under the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) and in post-primary schools. These workers, he noted, have yet to receive their 17.5% peculiarity allowance and deserve parity with their teaching counterparts who receive 27.5%.
The NLC chairman further advocated for the immediate implementation of the Consolidated Judiciary Salary Structure (CONJUSS) and the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS). He highlighted the need for continuous training, better welfare packages, and enhanced security for workers across sectors.
