Education Minister Orders Probe into Alleged Illegal Deductions from Student Loans
The Federal Ministry of Education has launched an investigation into allegations that certain universities made unauthorized deductions from funds disbursed under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) scheme.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
This development follows a report by The Guardian newspaper alleging financial impropriety by some Nigerian universities. In response, the Ministry, through its Director of Press and Public Relations, announced that an urgent meeting has been scheduled for May 6, 2025. This meeting will include vice chancellors of the implicated institutions and the Managing Director of NELFUND.
Education Minister, Dr. Marut Olatunji Alausa, described the situation as “deeply troubling,” warning that any proven misconduct would be treated as a serious breach of public trust and a betrayal of the government’s efforts to ensure equal access to higher education. He emphasized that transparency and financial accountability remain central to the National Education Sector Reform Initiative (NESRI), under which NELFUND was established.
Dr. Alausa reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to fair and transparent funding of students and institutions, stressing that NELFUND was designed to empower students and support universities legally—not to be exploited. He assured the public that the investigation will be thorough, and that anyone found guilty will face disciplinary measures.
To reinforce transparency, the Ministry, in collaboration with the Athena Centre, will introduce several new oversight tools, including a compliance-tracking initiative, a countdown webpage, and an Annual University Transparency Index. These measures aim to promote institutional integrity and global credibility.
Additionally, specialized training programs will be launched for bursars and ICT heads in universities and polytechnics to support the development and maintenance of open-access financial portals, ensuring greater visibility and accountability in the management of education funds.
