Shehu Sani Highlights Economic Pressures Eroding Nigerian Workers’ Wages

Published

As Nigeria observed Workers’ Day on May 1, 2025, former Senator Shehu Sani spotlighted the severe economic challenges confronting Nigerian workers. In a message shared on his verified account, Sani listed five critical factors that are diminishing the real value of workers’ wages in the country.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The five factors he identified are: the removal of subsidies, increased electricity and telecommunications tariffs, inflation, the devaluation of the Naira, and rising rents. Sani expressed concern over these issues, emphasizing how they are eroding the purchasing power of the average Nigerian worker.

Sani also underscored that while the ongoing discussions about revising the national minimum wage are essential, they may be ineffective if they do not address these broader economic pressures. He stressed that simply increasing wages is insufficient unless the underlying causes, such as inflation, are tackled.

“Wages that cannot keep pace with the rising costs of food, transportation, and energy are essentially symbolic,” Sani added, urging the government to take action to protect the earnings of workers from inflationary erosion.

May Day, celebrated annually on May 1, is a time to acknowledge the contributions of workers and advocate for better conditions and fair compensation. In Nigeria, the day typically involves rallies and speeches by unions and leaders, along with renewed calls for economic reforms to better support the workforce.

  • Consensus Over Ego: The PRP chairman emphasized that the party’s push for a mega-coalition is driven by consensus and constitutional processes rather than forcing Duke’s candidacy through on profile strength alone.
