In a statement released through his media office to mark the 2025 Workers’ Day, Atiku expressed profound admiration for the dedication, resilience, and sacrifices of Nigerian workers. He emphasized that the nation’s development rests squarely on the shoulders of its workforce across both public and private sectors.
He, however, decried what he called the government’s failure to acknowledge these sacrifices through meaningful policies, lamenting that workers continue to suffer poor compensation and economic hardship without adequate relief or protection.
“In the face of persistent hardship and limited rewards, Nigerian workers have shown remarkable fortitude,” he said. “It is regrettable that those charged with governance have not matched this devotion with sufficient policy support or justice.”
Atiku further criticized the federal government’s inaction on introducing palliative measures to ease the economic burden on the labour force. He charged policymakers to recognize workers not as tools, but as critical partners in nation-building.
He urged labour unions to remain unwavering in their advocacy for good governance, describing their continued efforts as a beacon of hope for millions of citizens. Atiku also called on governments at all levels to safeguard workers’ rights and uphold the principles of justice and decent work.
Drawing from the 2025 Workers’ Day theme, “Social Justice and Decent Work. Safety and Health of Workers,” Atiku concluded by appealing to all stakeholders to recommit to building a society where workers are respected, protected, and equitably treated.
