UK Denies Military Ties to Arrested Suspect in Delta Arms Case
The British High Commission has officially denied that a man arrested in Delta State for alleged illegal arms procurement is an active member of the United Kingdom’s military.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
This clarification followed a petition sent by Niger Delta stakeholders and civil society organizations to the High Commission, urging an investigation into the role of one Micah Polo—allegedly a British army major—in a plot to instigate violence in Warri.
Authorities say Polo, a Nigerian-born individual, was arrested last Friday by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) during a covert sting operation near Asaba. The operation uncovered a large cache of weapons, including over 50 AK-47 rifles, six pump-action shotguns, and more than 3,000 rounds of ammunition.
According to reports, Polo attempted to flee the country through Lagos before being intercepted. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend his accomplices, some of whom are reportedly still at large.
In its response, the British High Commission issued a statement on Wednesday clarifying Polo’s military background. “The individual identified in recent Nigerian media reporting is not a serving member of the UK Armed Forces,” the statement noted.
The Commission further explained that while Polo once served in the UK Armed Forces Reserves, he held only a junior rank and was not a commissioned officer. The High Commission also cited its obligation under the Data Protection Act and common law, stating it cannot release additional personal details regarding Polo’s previous service.
The development has sparked concerns over potential international connections in local arms trafficking and raised fresh calls for transparency and collaboration between Nigerian and foreign security agencies.
