On Monday afternoon, a devastating IED blast along the Kala-Balge road claimed the lives of 26 individuals, including 16 men, four women, and six children. These victims were traveling to Gamboru Ngala in Borno when the insurgents planted the explosive device, killing them instantly. The injured survivors were swiftly transported to a hospital for medical treatment.
Hours later, at around 7 PM, Boko Haram insurgents launched an attack on a funeral gathering in Kwaple, near Chibok. The attackers, arriving on motorcycles, carried out a brutal assault that resulted in the deaths of about 15 mourners. The terrorists targeted the gathering for nearly an hour before retreating, causing widespread panic and devastation in the community. They also torched a church and five houses, and kidnapped several residents.
The latest wave of attacks follows a growing concern raised by Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, who has repeatedly warned about the escalating insecurity in the region. The governor has expressed alarm over the frequency and boldness of Boko Haram’s operations and has urged the federal government to enhance military efforts against the insurgency. He called for additional resources, including technology and intelligence support, to aid military operations.
Governor Zulum’s senior technical assistant, Abdulrahman Bundi, confirmed that the state has been collaborating with federal agencies, providing security forces with critical equipment to aid in combating the insurgents. Bundi stressed the importance of maintaining a united front to restore peace in Borno.
Meanwhile, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, the Chief of Army Staff, reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to strengthening its capacity to combat terrorism. Addressing the 2025 Combat Arms Training Week in Bauchi, Oluyede underscored the importance of continuous improvements in training, logistics, and troop welfare. He emphasized that the Army would continue adopting innovative strategies and leveraging the support of the Nigerian Navy and Air Force to tackle the growing security threats.
The Army Chief’s remarks were supported by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who highlighted the need for a multi-faceted approach to Nigeria’s security challenges, combining both kinetic and non-kinetic measures to address the country’s complex security issues.
