Nnamdi Kanu’s Terrorism Trial Begins with First Witness Testifying in Secret
The long-awaited terrorism trial of Nnamdi Kanu, a prominent Biafran separatist leader, began on Tuesday at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The Federal Government presented its first witness behind a screen, as per a ruling from Justice James Omotosho.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The Federal Government’s lawyer, Chief Adegboyega Solomon, SAN, filed an ex-parte application requesting that the identities of the witnesses be shielded for security reasons due to the sensitive nature of the charges against Kanu. The application was granted with no objections from Kanu’s defense counsel, Kanu Agabi, SAN.
As part of the ruling, the judge allowed Kanu to view the faces of the witnesses testifying against him. At the start of the trial, the first witness, codenamed PWAAA, a Department of State Services (DSS) operative, provided a detailed account of Kanu’s arrest. He explained that, on October 15, 2015, based on intelligence, eight DSS operatives conducted a room-to-room search at a hotel in Ikeja, Lagos, where Kanu was found and detained.
The witness revealed that Kanu used his native name to secure the accommodation and that several items were recovered from his hotel room, including IPOB pamphlets, mobile devices, and other materials. These items were later presented as evidence in court.
Further, the witness played a video recording of Kanu’s interrogation, during which Kanu admitted to founding Radio Biafra in London, though he failed to register it with Nigeria’s National Broadcasting Commission (NBC). In his written statement, Kanu stated that his pursuit of Biafran independence was a fundamental right and not an act of terrorism.
Justice Omotosho has scheduled the next session for May 2, 2025, to allow for the cross-examination of the first witness.
