In a statement released on Monday, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced that the initiative is geared toward resolving the state’s longstanding water distribution challenges.
Wahab explained that the comprehensive project involves the construction, rehabilitation, and upgrading of water treatment plants and distribution networks to ensure reliable access to potable water, particularly for underserved communities.
He highlighted that the initiative includes two major components: the “Brown Field” phase, focused on rehabilitating existing waterworks, and the “Green Field” phase, aimed at building new facilities across Lagos to eliminate bottlenecks.
The Commissioner assured that the project would adhere to environmental, social, and safety standards to promote responsible development and sustainable outcomes.
Mukhtaar Tijani, the Managing Director of the Lagos Water Corporation (LWC), emphasized that the corporation would provide technical support, developmental oversight, and stakeholder engagement to guarantee the project’s success.
“These projects are designed not just to provide potable water to previously neglected areas but also to reduce the prevalence of waterborne diseases across Lagos,” Tijani noted.
Tewodros Polk, Group Managing Director of Belstar Capital, expressed the consortium’s commitment to delivering a world-class solution, pledging to involve local subcontractors to foster capacity building and economic development.
Polk further stated that the project would be executed using the Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Finance (EPCF) model, with insurance backing from the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation to safeguard investments and ensure long-term sustainability.
