Nigeria Joins BRICS Diplomats in Key Meeting Over US Trade Policy Concerns
On Monday, Nigeria participated in a pivotal meeting with senior diplomats from the BRICS countries in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The gathering aims to discuss the mounting global challenges posed by the aggressive trade policies of U.S. President Donald Trump, whose recent tariff impositions have raised concerns about the stability of the world economy.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The meeting comes at a crucial time, following the International Monetary Fund’s downward revision of global growth projections due to the economic impact of the new tariffs. Trump’s decision to impose a blanket 10% tariff on numerous countries, including high levies of up to 145% on Chinese products, has intensified global market volatility.
During the two-day event, diplomats from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa will deliberate on a collective strategy to safeguard the multilateral trading system. Mauricio Lyrio, Brazil’s BRICS representative, confirmed that the group is preparing a joint statement reaffirming the importance of global cooperation in trade.
Since its establishment in 2009, BRICS has expanded its reach to include Iran, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates, now comprising almost half of the world’s population and 39% of the global GDP. The diplomatic discussions in Rio are seen as a prelude to a larger leaders’ summit scheduled for July.
Adding to the tension, President Trump has threatened to impose a 100% tariff on BRICS nations if they undermine the U.S. dollar. Diplomats are also expected to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine, climate change, and the upcoming COP30 climate summit, which will be hosted by Brazil in November.
The summit will also feature participation from partner countries like Cuba, Malaysia, and Uganda, further broadening the scope of the discussions. The meeting’s outcomes could significantly influence the global economic landscape, especially as nations seek to navigate the complexities of a changing international trade environment.
