Ex-Army General Urges NASS to Use Constitutional Review to Tackle Political Defections
Brigadier General John Sura (retd), a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called on the National Assembly to resolve the ongoing issue of political defections through the current constitutional review process. He emphasized that the recent wave of defections, particularly in Delta State, reveals a disturbing lack of ideology, principles, and conscience among Nigeria’s political elites.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
General Sura, who expressed concerns about Nigeria heading towards a one-party system, attributed the defections to politicians’ reluctance to remain in opposition, driven by personal interests rather than ideological beliefs. He lamented that the founding principles of the PDP, aimed at advancing democratic ideals and leadership in Africa, are no longer being upheld by today’s political class.
In his remarks, General Sura noted that defections have become a common practice, with many politicians switching sides when they feel insecure or dissatisfied with their current positions. He stressed that for a true democracy to thrive, individuals with strong principles and ideologies are necessary. He warned that the continuous movement of politicians to the ruling party, the APC, could ultimately diminish the role of opposition parties.
Sura called for stronger legal action against defectors, proposing that anyone who leaves the party that helped them secure an elective office should vacate that position immediately. He highlighted the absence of a cohesive opposition party and noted that the current political environment allows for individuals, rather than parties, to serve as the primary opposition voices.
He concluded by urging the National Assembly to address the issue of defections during the ongoing constitutional review, emphasizing the need for clear and enforceable laws to prevent political instability and protect the integrity of the country’s democracy.
