El-Rufai: I Could Retire, But Nigeria’s Survival Demands Action

Speaking during a visit to Kano, where he met the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, and Social Democratic Party (SDP) leaders, El-Rufai clarified that his recent move to the SDP aims to build a credible political alternative.
According to Naija News, El-Rufai emphasized that the SDP offers a platform free from the godfatherism and dysfunctionality he believes have plagued both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He stressed that his decision was not motivated by personal grievances but by the urgent need to unify Nigerians under a party built on fairness and internal democracy.
“Twelve years ago, we united forces to form the APC and defeat an incumbent president. However, today’s circumstances demand a new strategy. The SDP is gathering Nigerians seeking fairness and genuine democracy,” El-Rufai said.
Addressing speculation, El-Rufai, a major figure in the APC’s formation, insisted he has no political ambitions left to pursue, asserting, “I am 65 years old. I could retire peacefully, but Nigeria faces an existential crisis. This is a battle for the country’s survival, not personal interests.”
On leadership, he dismissed calls for regional power rotation, emphasizing that Nigeria’s grave problems require leaders chosen based on competence rather than ethnicity or geography.
“Our national challenges are too great for us to care about where the president comes from. We need leadership that can deliver results,” he remarked.
Responding to concerns over recent defections to the APC, El-Rufai explained that the SDP’s focus is on grassroots mobilisation rather than courting political elites, stressing that elections are won by the people, not politicians.
He also denied claims that the SDP movement is limited to the North, revealing ongoing efforts to strengthen the party’s presence in the southern regions. “Nation-building is grassroots work, not something for television cameras,” he said.
Reflecting on his previous criticisms of the APC government, El-Rufai maintained that he has always prioritized Nigeria’s interests over personal or party loyalty.
He pointed to his opposition to the naira redesign policy under former President Buhari, which he said harmed ordinary Nigerians, as evidence of his consistent advocacy for the public good.
“I challenged the naira policy even when it was unpopular in my party. I have always spoken up when Nigeria’s interests were at stake,” he added.
El-Rufai concluded by urging young Nigerians not to lose faith in the country. “Nigeria gave me everything, despite losing my parents at eight years old. We cannot surrender it to corrupt politicians,” he said.
