Nigerian Travelers Decry Inhumane Treatment at Cape Verde Airport
Cape Verde often markets itself as a serene island destination, but what is not advertised is the mistreatment Nigerians can face at its entry points — including unlawful detention, harassment, and deportation without due process.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
On April 13, Oghenero Adaware, a Lagos-based Nigerian software engineer, along with four friends — Lily, Abimbola, David, and Jesutomi — embarked on what they anticipated would be a peaceful two-week holiday across Sal, Praia, and São Vicente. With all travel logistics properly arranged, including return flights, hotel bookings, over $3,000 in cash, and international credit cards, they had no intention of overstaying.
However, upon arrival at Amílcar Cabral International Airport, their plans were swiftly derailed. Immigration officer Antonio Lima, reportedly smelling of alcohol, immediately singled them out without reviewing any documentation or posing any questions. Instead of passing through immigration formalities, they were aggressively escorted back toward the plane. When Adaware requested an explanation, he was manhandled.
The situation rapidly worsened. Armed officers intervened, one of the group members was physically assaulted, and the travelers were informed they would be deported without being given any legitimate reason. No formal immigration processing occurred.
Subsequently, the group was confined in a small, windowless room within the airport — denied food, medication, access to their belongings, or communication. They endured unsanitary conditions for three days, sleeping on the floor under constant lighting. Sporadic bathroom access was only possible through the kindness of a cleaner.
Throughout their ordeal, no charges were filed, no English explanations provided, and no legal documents presented. At one point, Adaware was falsely informed that a lawyer awaited him, only to be further intimidated by immigration officers, a translator, and the immigration chief, Erica Ferreira. Instead of recording a statement, officials attempted to coerce a confession falsely implicating Lily in human trafficking activities.
Adaware refused to comply, reaffirming their legitimate travel intentions by presenting work credentials, travel documents, and financial evidence. Despite this, the group remained detained. Only on the third day were their phones returned, allowing them to alert their families.
Later that day, without any judicial hearing or chance to appeal, they were forcibly placed on a flight to Senegal. They were handed a letter falsely claiming their documents were “incomplete or invalid,” despite clear evidence to the contrary.
Adaware firmly believes that they were targeted solely because of their Nigerian nationality, despite fully complying with all travel regulations. He denounces the treatment they received as an act of humiliation rather than any lawful immigration enforcement.
By sharing his story, Adaware hopes to shed light on a gross violation of human rights and to advocate against discrimination based on nationality. His experience serves as a stark reminder that no traveler should endure such injustice merely because of the passport they hold.

Atiku Opens Up On ADC 2027 Game Plan, Says Consensus Candidate Comes First.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will first pursue a consensus arrangement before considering a primary election for its 2027 presidential ticket.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday while discussing the party’s leadership and strategy ahead of the next general election.
He said he is open to backing a consensus candidate if that becomes the party’s collective decision, stressing that such support should not be interpreted as stepping aside.
“It is not about stepping aside, but whether I am willing to support, and yes, I will,” Atiku said.
According to him, the ADC’s first priority is to build internal unity and reach an agreement among stakeholders before considering a competitive primary process.
“Our first option will be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t happen, then of course we will explore other options. And yes, I will support whoever eventually emerges,” he stated.
Atiku also expressed confidence in the political experience within the party, saying he believes a consensus is achievable and may make a full-scale primary contest unnecessary.
“That remains our preferred path. We will go for primaries if consensus fails, but I honestly do not expect it to get to that stage because we are dealing with mature and experienced politicians,” he added.
His comments come amid growing political consultations and coalition talks as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
