Wike Dares Rivers Elders: “Show Me One Step You Took for Peace”

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has challenged the moral credibility and efforts of traditional rulers and senior figures in Rivers State, asking them to publicly present any genuine initiative they have taken to restore calm amid the ongoing political unrest.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking during the Platinum Jubilee Thanksgiving in honour of Ken Chikere in Port Harcourt, Wike — the immediate past governor of the state — insisted that genuine peace cannot be achieved through staged protests or emotional blackmail. Instead, he called for an honest, inclusive reconciliation process.

“One month and seven days since Mr. President declared a state of emergency to save Rivers from descending into chaos, I challenge any so-called elder or traditional ruler to show what steps they’ve taken to restore lasting peace,” Wike stated.

Tensions in the state have escalated as Wike continues to clash with his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, in a fierce political struggle. The discord recently led to the defection of 27 lawmakers to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and prompted President Bola Tinubu to intervene by suspending key political figures and installing a sole administrator.

Wike also criticized orchestrated protests, particularly those involving women, saying such tactics are both ineffective and exploitative. “Parading women in the streets, even to the extent of stripping them, cannot deliver peace. True reconciliation requires sincerity and a united approach,” he said.

He revealed that while he has welcomed those who approached him with peace offerings, true harmony cannot come from secretive meetings or selective inclusion. “I’ve received some emissaries in good faith, but peace doesn’t rest on one person’s acceptance. All key players must be at the table — the State Assembly, National Assembly, political parties, and community leaders,” Wike asserted.

The former governor emphasized the need for unity, transparency, and inclusivity in resolving the conflict, stressing that political peace efforts must be genuine and not used as a decoy to score points.

Reflecting on recent events in the House of Assembly, Wike encouraged his supporters to remain confident and proud of resisting political manipulation. He concluded by warning against two-faced politics: “You can’t meet for peace talks during the day and then attack the same people on television at night. That is not the path to true peace.”

APC Defends Wike, Says PDP Backed His Ministerial Appointment.

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has said that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) approved the appointment of Nyesom Wike as a minister in President Bola Tinubu’s administration.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Yilwatda made the statement on Wednesday during a media chat in Abuja, while addressing questions about Wike’s continued membership of the PDP despite serving in an APC-led government.

He explained that the appointment was not unusual, noting that past administrations had also appointed opposition members into ministerial positions.

According to him, former ministers such as Bala Mohammed and Adamu Aliero served under PDP-led governments despite their party affiliations at the time.

“President Jonathan discovered Bala Mohammed was good enough and brought him from ANPP,” he said.

“Aliero was also appointed by President Yar’Adua from ANPP because of his experience,” he added.

Yilwatda argued that criticism of President Tinubu over Wike’s appointment was unfair, insisting it followed past political precedents.

He also cited other opposition figures currently serving in the government, saying the focus on Wike alone was selective.

The APC chairman further claimed that Wike formally notified the PDP National Working Committee in 2023 before accepting the ministerial appointment, and that the party gave its approval.

“Wike wrote the National Working Committee of the PDP before he took the appointment,” he said.

“The National Working Committee approved that he should come and serve.”

Yilwatda maintained that Wike’s position in the current administration was with the consent of the PDP, not solely the APC.
