Former Ivorian international and football legend Yaya Toure has candidly acknowledged that former Nigerian captain, John Mikel Obi, was more deserving of the 2013 CAF African Player of the Year award than himself.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Toure made this revelation during a recent episode of The Obi One Podcast, hosted by Mikel Obi. The engaging conversation saw the two decorated midfielders recounting their football journeys and sharing opinions on pivotal career milestones.

In 2013, Toure was awarded the prestigious CAF title, but he now admits Mikel’s influence—especially in Nigeria’s successful 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign—was outstanding and worthy of the accolade. Mikel was instrumental in leading the Super Eagles to their first AFCON triumph in nearly two decades, displaying consistent leadership and technical brilliance throughout the tournament.

During the podcast, Mikel Obi light-heartedly asked Toure if he had prior knowledge about the award outcome before the official announcement. Mikel himself noted he had heard rumors suggesting he was a frontrunner. Responding, Toure denied any insider tip-off and reaffirmed his admiration for Mikel’s form that year, both on the international stage and with Chelsea in the English Premier League.

“You deserved it, Obi. Honestly. That season was perfect… you were instrumental,” Toure said, reaffirming his respect for Mikel’s contribution to African football.

Toure also took the opportunity to highlight Mikel’s balanced playmaking and his leadership qualities, further sparking renewed conversations about historical award decisions and deserving African talents.

A Strong Endorsement for Donald Duke

  • Surpassing Competitors: Speaking during an interview, Baba-Ahmed confidently stated that, candidate for candidate, Donald Duke outperforms all other presidential contenders currently in the political space.

  • Integrity and Capability: He described Duke as part of a visionary leadership blueprint aimed at thinking critically, restoring national dignity, exhibiting true integrity, and offering young Nigerians a leadership style they can genuinely look up to.

The Strategic Push for an Opposition Coalition

Despite possessing what he considers the superior candidate, Baba-Ahmed explained why the party is actively championing a broader political alliance:

  • Consensus Over Ego: The PRP chairman emphasized that the party’s push for a mega-coalition is driven by consensus and constitutional processes rather than forcing Duke’s candidacy through on profile strength alone.

  • Defeating Fault Lines: Framing the 2027 election as a critical turning point for the nation, Baba-Ahmed noted that the stakes go far beyond individual party ambitions. The coalition aims to unite likeminded opposition forces to rescue Nigeria from its current trajectory and bridge its deep fault lines.
