Benue State Grapples with Escalating Violence as Herdsmen Attacks Claim More Lives
The security situation in Benue State has become a growing concern as attacks by suspected herders, alongside rising incidents of banditry, kidnapping, and violent gang activities, continue to destabilize the region. Since the tenure of former Governor Samuel Ortom and the advent of Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration, the state has faced relentless security challenges, which have exacerbated tensions between farmers and herders.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The effects of these attacks are visible, with a sharp decline in agricultural activities due to frequent raids on farming communities. Farmers are often abducted, killed, or displaced, causing widespread disruption. As of the latest reports, at least fifty-six individuals have lost their lives in two separate attacks in Gbagir and Logo Local Government Areas.
Governor Hyacinth Alia confirmed the attacks and emphasized that while efforts to secure the state are ongoing, residents should refrain from taking the law into their own hands. The state is working closely with the Office of the National Security Adviser to devise a comprehensive strategy to end these violent attacks and restore peace.
In recent developments, suspected Fulani herders targeted the Otobi Akpa community, killing at least 13 individuals and destroying over 50 homes. This violence, which began at dusk, involved indiscriminate shooting by the attackers, leaving the community shaken. Local leaders from the Idoma ethnic group expressed that the area, traditionally peaceful and accommodating to herders, has now become a flashpoint due to rising tensions over grazing rights and security.
Food security is also a major concern as agricultural activities are heavily disrupted. Many farmers, including those in remote areas, have abandoned their farmlands out of fear of further attacks. To mitigate this, the state government has formed the Benue State Civil Protection Guards to complement conventional security forces in ensuring the safety of farmers and their communities.
In addition to government efforts, community leaders like the Tor Tiv (the paramount ruler of the Tiv people) have supported peaceful solutions, including the repatriation of displaced persons to their homes. They believe these measures align with Governor Alia’s goal of safeguarding Benue’s residents.
Prominent political figures, such as Senator Abba Moro and former Senate President David Mark, have condemned the attacks, calling for swift and decisive action against the perpetrators. Senator Moro specifically expressed concern over the persistent violence in Benue South and the right of the local population to live peacefully without fear.
In light of the escalating violence, some local representatives are urging residents to take up arms for self-defense, noting that the security forces have not provided adequate protection. The calls for intervention have intensified, with some leaders accusing government forces of negligence in addressing the crisis.
Former Senatorial candidate Comrade Dan Onjeh has joined in urging both the state and federal governments to act quickly to end the violence. Onjeh highlighted the disturbing trend of collaboration between herders and local criminal elements, which has only compounded the security challenges in the state.
As the violence continues to escalate, it remains unclear when peace will be fully restored to Benue, but the state’s leadership is committed to working together with security agencies to find a lasting solution to the growing crisis.

Furthermore, they noted that the Court of Appeal upheld the NWC’s suspension of Anyanwu on March 9, 2026.
-
Call for Institutional Review: The petitioners have requested that the IGP investigate how INEC processed the contested November 3 letter despite being aware of the existing court orders and the NWC’s official resolutions.
