Keyamo: Claims of 80-Year Enugu Airport Lease Are False and Misleading

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has debunked circulating reports alleging that the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu was handed over to a private entity for 80 years.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement released on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media, Tunde Moshood, Keyamo clarified that the Federal Government has not entered into any concession agreement for the airport — or for any other international airport in the country.

He emphasized that while the government is indeed considering proposals for the concession of five key airports, no duration or agreement has been finalized. The minister explained that this concession initiative, inherited from previous administrations, aims to enhance efficiency and help the airports meet global standards, especially since many currently operate at a financial loss and require government subsidies.

“All concession proposals received are still under thorough evaluation,” the statement noted. “These evaluations will be reviewed by the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) and subsequently presented to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for approval.”

Keyamo further underscored the transparency of the process, revealing that he had directed the inclusion of aviation labour unions in the negotiation teams to ensure openness.

Dismissing the reports as baseless and deceptive, the minister reaffirmed his commitment to due process and national interest. “No predetermined agreement or duration has been set,” he stated, adding that any claim suggesting otherwise is a deliberate attempt to spread misinformation and sow distrust.

He assured Nigerians that the Ministry remains transparent and will not repeat past mistakes. “All decisions will be guided by accountability, the rule of law, and the best interest of Nigeria’s aviation sector,” the statement concluded.

He further stated that incentive packages would be awarded to teams that perform exceptionally, particularly in handling exam materials and submitting timely reports.

Reiterating JAMB’s zero-tolerance stance on malpractice, he warned candidates against bringing prohibited items into examination halls.
