Amaechi: I Wore One Shirt for Four Years, Lived Without Food Growing Up
Former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, has recounted the difficult circumstances of his upbringing, revealing that poverty forced him to wear the same shirt and pair of trousers for nearly four years.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking during a personal interview with Daily Sun, Amaechi, who once served as Governor of Rivers State and Speaker of the State Assembly, said his early life on the streets of Port Harcourt was marked by extreme hardship. According to him, his family could barely afford food, and changing clothes was a luxury they could not afford.
“Growing up in Port Harcourt was a battle against poverty. We could barely eat three meals a day, and changing clothes was almost impossible,” Amaechi recalled.
He noted that many people doubt his story, but his former classmates can attest to his experience. He humorously mentioned teasing them during school reunions, saying, “One of you could have been Mrs. Amaechi if you had looked past the poverty back then.”
Amaechi pointed out that their lack of interest stemmed from the belief that he had no future, but insisted that men often fight for relevance, and he was determined to rise above his circumstances.
Describing himself as grounded and humble, Amaechi emphasized the simplicity of his nature, shaped by those formative years of struggle and deprivation.
Amaechi, who once chaired the Nigerian Governors’ Forum and came second in the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primaries ahead of the 2023 elections, spoke candidly about his life beyond politics, highlighting how resilience shaped his journey to national prominence.
