Falana Under Fire: Wike’s Spokesman Questions SAN’s Legacy and Legal Credibility
A fresh controversy is brewing within Nigeria’s legal and political spheres as Lere Olayinka, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has issued a scathing criticism of prominent human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement issued on Monday, Olayinka denounced Falana’s recent remarks concerning the appointment of Life Benchers, accusing him of undervaluing legal professionals who have not engaged in litigation. Olayinka called Falana’s assertions “laughable and absurd,” stating that the senior lawyer wrongly believes only courtroom advocates are qualified for such prestigious appointments.
Defending Wike’s recent elevation to the Body of Benchers, Olayinka said the former Rivers State Governor earned it through demonstrable efforts to strengthen legal education—citing his role in establishing campuses of the Nigerian Law School in Port Harcourt and Yenagoa, as well as ongoing infrastructure projects in Bwari, Abuja.
He also challenged Falana’s own contributions to the legal profession, contrasting him with influential Senior Advocates like Afe Babalola and Wole Olanipekun, who have invested significantly in legal development, especially in Falana’s native Ekiti State.
Olayinka further accused Falana of misrepresenting legal judgments to the public, particularly regarding the ongoing crisis in the Rivers State House of Assembly. He criticized Falana’s interpretation of constitutional provisions, especially Section 96 (1), and questioned how such views align with the qualifications expected of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
“This kind of misdirection and distortion from someone of his standing raises serious concerns,” Olayinka said, adding that the legal community should scrutinize such misleading narratives.
As of the time of this report, Femi Falana has not issued a response to the allegations.
