CAN Mourns Pope Francis, Celebrates His Global Legacy of Compassion and Justice
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed profound grief over the passing of Pope Francis, honoring his legacy as a moral compass whose leadership deeply impacted not just the Catholic Church but Christians across Africa, including Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement issued on Monday, April 21, 2025, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, extended condolences to the global Catholic community and described the Pope’s death at age 88 as the conclusion of a transformative era in Christian leadership.
“Pope Francis was a distinguished figure in the Christian world, embodying values of mercy, justice, and humility. His tenure enriched the Church and resonated strongly with the Nigerian faithful,” Archbishop Okoh remarked.
Despite never visiting Nigeria, Pope Francis’ dedication to interfaith dialogue and unity was noted to have positively influenced Nigeria’s diverse religious atmosphere. Okoh emphasized that his travels across Africa and messages of peace were widely appreciated in Nigeria.
CAN also highlighted the Pope’s firm stance on global challenges such as poverty, corruption, inequality, and climate change. His widely respected encyclicals, Laudato Si’ and Amoris Laetitia, shaped conversations around environmental stewardship and the sanctity of family life — principles embraced by many Nigerians.
“We pray for his peaceful rest and ask that the Catholic Church finds strength during this time of transition,” Okoh added. “Pope Francis’ legacy will continue to inspire efforts toward unity, compassion, and social justice in Nigeria.”
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, Pope Francis was elected the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church in 2013. Known for his humility and reform-minded approach, he worked to bridge religious and societal divides throughout his pontificate.
