On Sunday, April 20, 2025, Onakoya and his American partner, Shawn Martinez, achieved this historic milestone after 64 consecutive hours of intense chess gameplay at Times Square, New York.
This achievement breaks the former record of 61 hours, 3 minutes, and 34 seconds, previously held by Norwegian players Odin Blikra Vea and Askild Bryn in 2024.
Pushing further beyond the record, the duo continued playing until they hit a 70-hour target, with the overarching mission of advocating for and fundraising towards educational opportunities for homeless children across Africa.
In a heartfelt statement, Onakoya said:
“We’re doing this for the dreams of millions of African children without access to education.”
Although the marathon has concluded successfully, official verification from Guinness World Records is still pending.
This isn’t Onakoya’s first attempt. In April 2024, he played a 60-hour marathon, breaking the previous record at the time, although it was not officially acknowledged by Guinness.
Now, with this landmark feat, Onakoya has not only brought pride to Nigeria but also spotlighted the power of chess as a tool for social impact and transformation.
