Tinubu’s Housing Dream at Risk as Contractors Falter on Quality and Deadlines
The Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (FMHUD) has raised alarms over persistent delays and poor workmanship by contractors handling projects under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Housing Programme. Minister Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa has, within the past month, issued two strong warnings to erring contractors—urging them to meet deadlines and maintain quality standards or face contract revocation, demolition of substandard structures, and blacklisting.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Despite these warnings, lapses remain evident at several construction sites, casting doubt on the commitment of some developers. According to the Minister’s Special Adviser on Media Strategy, Mr. Mark Chieshe, the Ministry is conducting routine performance reviews and enforcing corrective measures to uphold the President’s housing vision.
“Work is progressing in phases across 14 states,” Chieshe said. “Some locations, like Katsina, Sokoto, and Akwa Ibom, are already at roofing level, and infrastructure such as roads and electricity are underway.”
However, the Ministry has yet to publicly confirm the sanctioning of any contractor, raising concerns about accountability. Anonymous sources within the civil service allege that some contractors are missing targets and using substandard materials—thereby endangering the program’s success.
A senior civil servant commented: “This is public money, and these homes are for ordinary Nigerians. If contractors can’t deliver, they must be held accountable.”
Housing sector analysts say while such challenges are not new, the Ministry’s openness and insistence on quality compliance mark a shift in approach. During a recent meeting with developers, Dangiwa reiterated: “This is not business as usual. Any substandard work will be demolished and redone at the contractor’s expense.”
Progress has been reported in some states, but the lack of visible penalties has raised eyebrows. The Ministry insists that enforcement is ongoing behind the scenes and appeals to the public for patience.
“Every housing unit will meet the standards of quality, safety, and affordability,” Chieshe assured.
