Bayelsa Court Orders Fast-Track Trial for Patience Jonathan’s Former Domestic Staff
Bayelsa State High Court has mandated an accelerated hearing in the prolonged trial of 15 domestic workers formerly employed by ex-First Lady, Patience Jonathan. These individuals have been held without conviction at the Okaka Correctional Centre in Yenagoa for nearly six years, over allegations of missing jewellery reportedly tied to the former First Lady.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The decision to fast-track proceedings was reached during a court session on Thursday, marking a rare moment of agreement between prosecution and defence teams in a case long criticized for its drawn-out process.
“The court was productive today, and both legal sides have agreed to conclude the matter swiftly,” a source close to the defence told SaharaReporters, expressing optimism about the new momentum.
The accused, arrested in 2019, have consistently been denied bail amid allegations that the legal team representing Mrs. Jonathan deliberately used stalling tactics. These include inconsistent witness testimonies, repeated adjournment requests, and claims of illnesses or unavailable witnesses.
Sources allege that the prolonged delays are part of a strategy to frustrate the judicial process and keep the accused imprisoned indefinitely. One witness, according to insiders, took nearly two years to complete testimony, while the judge initially deferred bail hearings to listen to prosecution evidence before ultimately denying bail, citing the capital nature of the charges.
The private prosecutors, Ige Asemudara and Samuel Chinedu Maduba, have been accused of manipulating the system by dragging out the trial. However, the court has denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that delays stemmed from the involvement of multiple defence attorneys and the need for thorough cross-examinations.
Despite this, the 15 defendants—Williams Alami, Vincent Olabiyi, Ebuka Cosmos, John Dashe, Tamunokuro Abaku, Sahabi Lima, Emmanuel Aginwa, Erema Deborah, Precious Kingsley, Tamunosiki Achese, Salomi Wareboka, Sunday Reginald, Boma Oba, Vivian Golden, and Emeka Benson—remain incarcerated without conviction.
With the court’s latest directive, there is renewed hope that justice will finally be served for the detainees, whose families have repeatedly called for a fair and timely resolution.
