PDP Will Not Be Pushed Into Any Shady Coalition—Segun Sowunmi Declares
Segun Sowunmi, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and convener of The Alternative, has stated emphatically that the party will not succumb to pressure to join any vague or unstructured political coalition. According to Sowunmi, any attempt to form a coalition must involve clear communication of its purpose, structure, and operational framework. “Among the 18 registered political parties in Nigeria, not one would blindly enter into a coalition without knowing the rationale, structure, and roles involved,” he said.
He highlighted that the PDP, founded in 1998, is a legacy party built on foundational principles such as national unity, zoning, and a center-right ideology that promotes a pro-business agenda while still supporting social welfare.
“The PDP is a pan-Nigerian party, conscious of the country’s diversity. It upholds zoning and operates with a balanced ideology that respects the private sector while being welfare-oriented,” Sowunmi said. He insisted that any alliance must respect these core values.
Sowunmi also advised that party stakeholders, especially PDP governors, must be fully briefed before any engagement in coalition talks. He warned against dragging the PDP into arrangements that lack clarity or strategic purpose.
He posed critical questions to those advocating for a merger, challenging whether the PDP—with its governors, senators, and strong grassroots network—should dissolve into parties with no established leadership or structure.
He also addressed the recent communiqué issued by PDP governors rejecting merger talks ahead of the 2027 elections. According to him, this should not be interpreted as internal discord but rather as a necessary conversation among stakeholders.
On former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s ongoing push for opposition unity, Sowunmi stressed that even Atiku would need to engage the party leadership to justify any proposed alliance. “Atiku will still need to return to the party and explain,” he said.
Contrasting views were presented by former Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam, who criticized the governors’ stance as disconnected from the party’s current realities and broader member sentiment. Nonetheless, Sowunmi maintained that the PDP will not be coerced into a coalition without mutual understanding and respect.
