Akpabio Has Every Right to Defend His Integrity — Umohinyang Speaks on Natasha Allegations

Speaking during an interview, Umohinyang expressed concern over the ongoing controversy, cautioning that such distractions detract from pressing national issues like poverty and insecurity. He argued that while the average Nigerian is more focused on daily survival than political drama, this matter has become a national embarrassment due to the lack of decorum expected from members of the National Assembly.
Referring to the allegations of sexual harassment made by Senator Natasha, Umohinyang emphasized the importance of backing such serious claims with solid evidence. “Both Natasha and Akpabio are lawyers,” he stated. “One would expect that such grave accusations should be supported by factual proof, not hearsay or reliance on third parties like the DSS to retrieve digital conversations.”
He pointed out inconsistencies in Natasha’s narrative and questioned the timing and manner of the allegations. Umohinyang also criticized her for not reporting the alleged harassment to the police, despite the fact that Akpabio, as a public official, does not enjoy immunity from prosecution.
Umohinyang likened Natasha’s claims to a “pattern,” referencing previous allegations she made against former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello and Senator Dino Melaye. He warned against using such serious accusations as a tool for political vendettas, urging the Inspector General of Police to investigate the matter proactively to establish the truth.
When asked whether Akpabio should step down to allow for an impartial investigation, Umohinyang disagreed. He noted that no official complaint has been submitted to the Senate against Akpabio, and therefore there is no basis for such a call. He criticized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for calling on the President to intervene, stating that the matter lies squarely within the legislative and judicial spheres.
In conclusion, Umohinyang insisted that if Natasha fails to prove her allegations, Akpabio has every right to seek redress in court to defend his name and restore his reputation.
