2027 Election Fears Distracting Tinubu from Governance – Activist Claims

Published

Activist and constitutional lawyer, Maduabuchi Idam, has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration, claiming it is distracted by the looming 2027 elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement released on Thursday, Idam accused Tinubu of neglecting national security due to political calculations surrounding his re-election bid. According to him, this distraction has left Nigerians vulnerable to the rising threat of insecurity, with citizens “at the mercy of hoodlums and bandits.”

Idam argued that Nigeria’s current four-year, two-term political structure hinders meaningful progress, as politicians are more focused on retaining power than delivering on their mandates.

“I believe President Tinubu is gripped by the fear of 2027 elections, which has caused a lack of attention to the nation’s growing security challenges,” he said.

He noted that leaders often begin strategizing for their next term almost immediately after assuming office, leaving governance to suffer.

Idam further urged the National Assembly to revisit and adopt the proposed six-year single-term system for elected public officers, stating it would improve focus on governance and reduce the obsession with re-election.

He criticized the governor of Ebonyi State for similarly prioritizing political appearances over tangible development. “Beyond posing for photos with celebrities like Obi Cubana, there is little to show in terms of investment or completed projects,” he added.

He concluded by calling for urgent legislative action, emphasizing that “a six-year single tenure is necessary to break the cycle of political self-interest that has stalled Nigeria’s development,” and expressed condolences to communities affected by avoidable security lapses.
