Yahaya Bello Petitions IGP, Seeks Prosecution of Senator Natasha Over Alleged Defamation
Former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, has filed a formal petition with the Inspector General of Police (IGP), calling for the investigation and prosecution of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for what he describes as defamatory and inciting statements made against him.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In the petition, submitted by his legal representative, Mr. N.A. Abubakar, Bello urged the police to summon Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to provide evidence supporting her claims. Should she fail to do so, he demanded her arrest and prosecution for criminal defamation, dissemination of false information, and incitement capable of disturbing public peace.
The controversial statements were made during a political rally held on April 1, 2025, in Okehi Local Government Area, Kogi State. Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had alleged that Senate President Godswill Akpabio instructed Bello to orchestrate her assassination and fund a recall process against her. She claimed to have written to the IGP about the matter but had not made the allegations public until her speech.
Bello’s legal team described her remarks as dangerously false and inflammatory, capable of inciting political unrest and damaging his reputation. The petition cites relevant sections of Nigerian law, including the Cybercrimes Act 2015 and the Penal Code, under which the statements qualify as criminal offenses.
In addition to the police petition, Bello’s lawyers — led by Chief R.O. Balogun, SAN — have also served Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan with a legal notice demanding a public retraction and apology published in two national newspapers. The notice also mandates her to cease all further defamatory commentary. She has been given 14 days to comply or face civil and criminal proceedings.
Bello’s counsel asserted that although the former governor had previously tolerated similar attacks from the senator, he no longer holds office and, therefore, no longer feels obliged to show the same level of restraint. The legal team also accused Akpoti-Uduaghan of manipulating political platforms to spread falsehoods, potentially endangering lives and destabilizing peace.
The petition concluded with an appeal to the IGP for swift action to protect public order and discourage further misuse of political office for personal vendettas and disinformation.
