Olawepo-Hashim Slams Opposition’s Use of Ethnic Sentiment in Politics

In a statement, Olawepo-Hashim criticized the use of tribal narratives in political debates, urging a shift toward discussions that tackle the nation’s real issues—such as economic decline, insecurity, and diplomatic shortcomings.
He dismissed recent insinuations that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is ethnically skewed, calling such allegations both ironic and unfounded. He cited Tinubu’s electoral loss in Lagos—widely considered a Yoruba stronghold—as evidence against claims of tribal favoritism.
“The narrative that this is a Yoruba government lacks merit,” he said. “Even among his ethnic base, Tinubu faced resistance during the elections. Lagos voters chose Peter Obi, an Igbo candidate, while also re-electing Sanwo-Olu of the APC—proof of Nigerians’ political sophistication.”
Olawepo-Hashim also criticized former allies of the President who are now fueling ethnic divisions due to unfulfilled personal ambitions. He labeled their actions as hypocritical, having once supported the very government they now denounce on ethnic grounds.
Referencing historical electoral moments, he highlighted how voters have often prioritized leadership quality over ethnic identity—like Kano residents voting for Yoruba candidate Moshood Abiola over their own kinsman Bashir Tofa in 1993.
He emphasized that Nigeria’s core challenges lie in poor governance, not ethnic diversity. “Inflation, poverty, hunger, and insecurity are the urgent crises—not ethnic rivalry,” he stated.
Olawepo-Hashim concluded by urging the political elite to adopt a more issue-based approach, focusing on performance, unity, and policy-driven leadership. “To move forward, Nigeria must rise above ethnic division and focus on national development,” he said.
