Edo APC, PDP Clash Over Premature 2027 Presidential Endorsements
The Edo State Government and the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday engaged in a heated exchange over alleged campaign activities by Governor Monday Okpebholo in support of President Bola Tinubu’s potential re-election bid in 2027.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The dispute followed a recent statement from the Presidency disassociating itself from any form of premature campaign materials, including billboards promoting President Tinubu’s 2027 candidacy, which it labelled unauthorized and unlawful.
In a press release, Edo PDP Publicity Secretary, Chris Nehikhare, described the Presidency’s stance as a significant setback to Governor Okpebholo’s alleged efforts to gain political favour through “illegal political stunts.”
He stated, “The Federal Government’s disavowal of 2027 campaign billboards, including those linked to Senator Monday Okpebholo and the APC-led government in Edo, underscores a blatant disregard for Nigeria’s electoral laws and validates our earlier concerns about the governor’s political antics.”
In a swift rebuttal, the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, described the PDP’s statement as “reckless, misleading, and malicious,” accusing the opposition of propagating falsehoods to remain relevant.
“The PDP continues to demonstrate an unhealthy obsession with Governor Okpebholo, relying on fabrication to stay afloat in political discourse,” Itua remarked.
He further condemned the PDP’s attempt to cite electoral law, calling it hypocritical given the party’s alleged history of executive lawlessness while in power.
“The same PDP that governed through impunity and misrule has no moral ground to lecture anyone on constitutional integrity or democratic values,” Itua stated.
He warned that PDP leaders, including Nehikhare, would be held accountable for what he termed “spurious allegations” against Governor Okpebholo and other public officials.
The Edo State Government emphasized its commitment to development, urging all political actors to avoid divisive tactics, stating, “Edo belongs to us all. No amount of bitterness or propaganda will derail the people’s mandate or disrupt progress.”
