Singer Portable Remanded in Ilorin Prison Over Unmet Bail Conditions
Popular Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, known by his stage name Portable, has been remanded at the Oke Kura Correctional Centre in Ilorin, Kwara State, after failing to meet the stringent bail terms set by an Upper Area Court.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The court granted Portable bail on Monday following his arraignment over allegations of criminal defamation. However, the singer was unable to fulfill the court’s requirements, which included a ₦1 million bail sum and two sureties.
As specified by the court, one of the sureties must be an executive member of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN)—either the Chairman or Secretary—while the other must be a property owner residing in Ilorin’s Government Reserved Area (GRA), possessing a valid Certificate of Occupancy.
Portable’s arrest, which took place on Sunday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, was confirmed by the Kwara State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi. The arrest followed a petition filed by one Mr. Okunola Saheed (also known as Saheed Osupa), who accused the singer of criminal defamation, threats to life, incitement, character assassination, and conduct likely to disturb public peace.
Portable’s legal representative, Barrister Isaac Adebayo, confirmed that although bail had been granted, efforts were still ongoing to satisfy the challenging conditions for his release.
The controversial artist, who often refers to himself as “the newborn Fela,” is known for his brash persona and frequent run-ins with controversy. His current legal troubles may yet again test his resilience in the public eye.
