From Glory to Struggle: Shoprite Battles Stock Shortages Amid Rising Competition.

Published

According to Afrinvest Research, changing consumer preferences, rising competition, and operational costs are reshaping Nigeria’s retail supermarket landscape. Large chains and fast-expanding neighborhood stores are adopting new strategies to attract price-sensitive customers, while some major players face significant challenges.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Shoprite, once a pioneer in modern retail in Nigeria, is struggling to maintain stock across its outlets in Lagos, Ibadan, Abuja, Owerri, and Ota. Visits to locations such as the Sangotedo branch in Lagos and the Ikeja City Mall store revealed largely empty shelves in several sections, with only confectionery and food items remaining adequately stocked. Other outlets, including those in Ilorin and Ibadan, have been closed, and the Jabi Lake Mall branch in Abuja reported supply shortages for up to two months. Staff at the Owerri Mall outlet noted early closures during peak hours, citing persistent inventory issues and unpaid supplier obligations as key problems.

Retail Supermarkets Nigeria, which acquired the Shoprite franchise from South Africa’s Shoprite Holdings and is now fully Nigerian-owned under Persianas Investment Limited and other investors, is confronting internal challenges and shifts in consumer behavior. Interim CEO Dr. Folakemi Fadahunsi acknowledged rising operational costs, inflation, and evolving shopping habits as contributing factors but affirmed that the company is implementing strategies to improve efficiency and customer experience.

Meanwhile, neighborhood stores such as The Prince Supermarket, Justrite, Jendol, and Bokku Mart are thriving by offering convenience, competitive pricing, and extensive product ranges. The Prince Supermarket, for instance, provides diverse goods, including groceries, electronics, clothing, and fitness equipment, all under one roof, with plans to expand further in Lagos. Bokku Mart has gained popularity through its hard discount model, standardized pricing, and high customer satisfaction.

Dr. Fadahunsi emphasized that Shoprite Nigeria is transforming its business model to be leaner, customer-focused, and more locally integrated. Over 80% of the supermarket’s products are now sourced from Nigerian suppliers, helping to reduce costs, improve supply reliability, and support local agriculture. Investments in renewable energy, reusable packaging, digital retail solutions, and customer loyalty programs aim to ensure a sustainable, modern shopping experience while reaffirming the brand’s commitment to quality, affordability, and accessibility.

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani announced during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today that his administration has not acquired any new loans since he took office, despite allocating approximately ₦6.7 billion monthly to service heavy debts left behind by past administrations. Attributing the administration’s financial stability to fiscal prudence and strategic project prioritization, Sani stated:

“Since I became governor, I’ve not borrowed with one kobo. It’s about being prudent. It’s about selecting or being very careful in where you invest the money.”

In addition to fiscal matters, the governor highlighted advancements across sectors including agriculture, education, infrastructure, security, and skills development. Addressing the state’s out-of-school children challenge, Sani noted that a comprehensive government household-mapping initiative uncovered roughly 550,000 children previously out of school, allowing the state to leverage reliable data rather than estimates and successfully return over 300,000 of them back to the classroom as interventions continue.

THE 2027 EARTHQUAKE: Atiku Drops Massive Fresh Promise That Will Change Nigeria Forever!.

Published

on

African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has pledged to fully reopen Nigeria’s land borders if elected in 2027, arguing that current restrictions have crippled legitimate transborder commerce and left many young entrepreneurs bankrupt. In a video shared by ADC chieftain Dele Momodu, Atiku emphasized that northern states rely heavily on cross-border trade with neighboring countries like Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Benin, and that shutting these borders has destroyed millions in business capital while fueling youth unemployment and insecurity.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Beyond border reopening, Atiku outlined plans to upgrade southern port infrastructure in locations such as Calabar, Uyo, and Port Harcourt to ease the logistics bottleneck. Drawing on his experience running a factory in Yola, he pointed out that transporting containers from Lagos to the North-East takes up to two months due to poor roads and long distances, whereas shipments from southern ports could reach Yola in just 24 hours if proper infrastructure were established.

While previous administrations—beginning with nationwide closures under President Muhammadu Buhari in August 2019 to curb smuggling, and followed by selective reopenings including the Tsamiya and Kamba borders under President Tinubu in February 2026—have partially eased restrictions, many land borders continue to face tight controls.

ROYAL TRAGEDY: Norway Mourns As King Harald Passes Away At 89 In Stunning National Blow!.

Published

on

Norway’s King Harald V has passed away at the age of 89 following a prolonged battle with health issues, making way for his son, Crown Prince Haakon, to ascend the throne. The Norwegian Royal Palace confirmed that the king died peacefully at 6:35 a.m. on Friday, August 28, at Oslo University Hospital. Flags at the Royal Palace were immediately lowered to half-mast as citizens gathered to leave flowers and mourn.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Harald had been hospitalized since August 17 due to haemolytic anaemia, a condition causing rapid red blood cell destruction. After his health worsened sharply on Thursday, Queen Sonja, Crown Prince Haakon, and close family members rushed to his bedside, with Haakon staying through the night. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store also canceled a scheduled trip to Germany as the crisis unfolded.

Public tributes highlighted the late monarch’s unifying presence. Citizens remembered him as a warm, steady figure who championed social inclusion and stood as a pillar against growing political polarization. Having assumed the throne in 1991 after his father King Olav V’s passing, Harald was Europe’s oldest reigning monarch and consistently refused to abdicate, honoring the oath he took before parliament for life.

The royal family has navigated several recent challenges alongside the king’s failing health, including Queen Sonja’s brief hospitalization in May and Crown Prince Haakon’s wife, Mette-Marit, undergoing a lung transplant in July. Mette-Marit also faced scrutiny over past correspondence with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, while her son, Marius Borg Hoiby, was sentenced in June to four years in prison for multiple offenses.
