PDP Governors Convene in Ibadan to Address Party Crisis, Rivers Emergency Rule, and 2027 Coalition Strategy

Published

Governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are meeting in Ibadan, Oyo State, from Sunday to Monday to discuss critical challenges threatening the party’s future. A primary focus of the discussions is the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, particularly the legal battle at the Supreme Court regarding the federal government’s state of emergency declaration and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, the Vice Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The meeting, confirmed by the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, will also cover several other issues, including efforts to unite the opposition in preparation for the 2027 elections, the delay in holding National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings, and the persistent leadership crisis within the party.

A key concern is the Supreme Court’s decision to reinstate Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary, which conflicts with the governors’ preference for Sunday Ude-Okoye. This ruling, handed down on March 21, 2025, overturned the Court of Appeal’s decision and has deepened tensions within the party. Both factions claim victory, and the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the ruling is expected to guide further discussions.

Sources suggest the governors will engage in candid talks, with the future of the PDP hanging in the balance. Other critical topics to be addressed include the leadership crisis within the National Working Committee (NWC), the South-South zonal leadership dispute, and strategies to build a broader opposition coalition. However, there are concerns that the coalition effort is being hindered by conflicting ambitions and weak coordination among opposition leaders.

PDP insiders report widespread disillusionment among party members, with over 75% of them reportedly dissatisfied with the current state of affairs. There are fears that unless decisive action is taken, the party may lose relevance before the 2027 elections.

To address these issues, several party elders, including former Senate Presidents David Mark and Bukola Saraki, as well as key PDP figures such as Governor Bala Mohammed and former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido, are engaging in consultations to rescue the party from its current crisis.
