Flying Eagles Begin Campaign for 8th U-20 AFCON Title in Challenging Group B
Nigeria’s Flying Eagles are poised to launch their pursuit of an eighth continental title at the 2025 Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), taking place in Egypt from April 27 to May 18. Following the official group-stage draw in Cairo, the Flying Eagles have been placed in Group B, where they will face strong opposition from Tunisia, Morocco, and Kenya. This group is expected to be competitive, particularly with two formidable North African teams and East African newcomers.
Group A will consist of five teams, including hosts Egypt, who were granted the top spot (A1) and boast three AFCON U-20 titles. Group C will be led by defending champions Senegal, placed in C1, alongside Ghana, Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The tournament format will see the top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-placed teams, qualify for the quarter-finals.
Notably, the draw had to be revised after Côte d’Ivoire withdrew as host, prompting a reshuffling that moved Egypt and South Africa—originally in Nigeria’s group—into Group A with Zambia, Tanzania, and Sierra Leone.
Ahead of the tournament, the Flying Eagles completed a three-week intensive training camp in Katsina and have now returned to Abuja. They are scheduled to depart for Egypt later this week for an eight-day final preparation phase, focusing on team cohesion and tactical strategies.
This year’s competition carries extra weight, as the top four teams will secure qualification for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup, slated for Chile from September 27 to October 19.
Nigeria’s Minister of Regional Development, Engr. Reflecting on her departure from the national team, Ohale shared an emotional statement on Instagram:
“After 16 years of wearing the Nigeria jersey, representing my country and giving everything I had for this beautiful sport, I have made the very difficult decision to retire from international football… I gave this jersey my youth, my strength, my sweat, my tears, and my heart. And if I had to do it all over again, I would choose Nigeria every single time.”
She concluded her farewell message with deep appreciation, stating that she steps away from international duty carrying 86 total appearances, zero regrets, and boundless gratitude for her teammates, fans, and the nation.
Joining the global wave of recognition, CAF honored her monumental impact on African women’s football via social media, writing:
