Federal High Court Judge Rebukes EFCC Over Alleged False Media Reports
Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a stern warning to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegedly misleading information published on its website regarding the ongoing trial of Ali Bello, Chief of Staff to the Kogi State Government.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
During Monday’s hearing, Bello’s lawyer, Abubakar Aliyu, SAN, accused the EFCC of publishing a false narrative that portrayed his client as guilty in the eyes of the public. The report in question alleged that Bello paid for a Maitama property later discovered to be under EFCC investigation—a claim the defense flatly denied.
EFCC’s counsel, Abbas Muhammed, admitted seeing the publication but said he could not confirm its authenticity without checking with the agency’s media team.
Justice Omotosho expressed deep concern over the impact of media misinformation on judicial credibility. “I can’t be put in the public for analysis on what happens in court,” he warned, emphasizing that such acts erode public trust and distort court proceedings.
The judge further cautioned that he might return the case file to the Chief Judge for reassignment if misrepresentation persists.
Meanwhile, the court heard testimony from the EFCC’s 11th witness, Segun Adeleke of EFAB Properties Ltd, who confirmed a $500 million cash payment was made by an individual named Shehu Bello—who is not one of the defendants.
Justice Omotosho adjourned the matter to May 7 and May 9 for further proceedings.
