Benue Government Blocks Peter Obi’s Visit to IDP Camps Amid Political Tension
The Benue State Government has taken steps to prevent Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, from visiting Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in the state. However, Obi’s planned visit has sparked political tension, with state officials advising Governor Hyacinth Alia to block the visit. They voiced concerns that the visit could be perceived as a political maneuver by former Governor Samuel Ortom, a strong supporter of Obi, to influence public opinion and undermine the current administration.
The decision to restrict Obi’s visit appears to be influenced by fears that it could spark political drama, particularly with speculation surrounding Governor Alia’s relationship with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). There is also worry that the visit could reignite rivalries and offer Ortom a platform to strengthen his political influence in the state, as Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign saw unexpected support in Benue.
In response, Governor Alia issued a public warning through his Chief Press Secretary, cautioning against any high-profile visits without prior approval, emphasizing that the safety and security of such visits could not be guaranteed. The statement did not specifically mention Peter Obi but was understood to be aimed at deterring his visit.
Despite these political obstacles, a source close to Peter Obi confirmed that the visit was intended solely for humanitarian purposes and was part of his ongoing national outreach to displaced communities.

In a viral video detailing the incident, Sandra explained that hours after participating in the morning service, taking communion, and paying her regular offering, she attempted to fund a voucher purchase by transferring N1,640,200 to her personal Zenith Bank account. Instead, the heavy sum was erroneously sent to the church account.
Making a public appeal to anyone with contacts at Streams of Joy International, the single mother of two stressed that the funds do not belong to her and that the rightful owners have already begun demanding the money.
Esther Umoh, a media aide to Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi, has strongly refuted claims that peaceful protesters were behind the recent violent assault on their convoy in Benue State. Speaking out via a statement on her official X account, Umoh alleged that the Special Assistant on Youth to the Benue State Governor was actively embedded with the thugs who launched the attack along the Gboko-Makurdi Expressway in Makurdi. The Borno State Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation, Youths and Sports, Hon. Saina Buba, has formally retracted and apologized for a controversial statement he made during a public engagement hosted by the City Boy Movement in Maiduguri. During a press briefing with journalists at his office in Maiduguri, Hon. Buba completely withdrew the remark and issued an apology to anyone offended by the rhetoric. He explicitly noted that his words were never meant to infringe upon or undermine the constitutional rights of Borno State citizens regarding their freedom of choice and association under the Nigerian Constitution. Furthermore, he clarified that his statements were not meant to be interpreted literally, but due to the ongoing public anxiety and concern, a formal retraction was necessary.
The commissioner also emphasized that his fiery rhetoric does not reflect the core principles of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or the governance style and administration of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum. He reiterated that the state government stays firmly dedicated to safeguarding the rights of all residents and upholding democratic values.
