Lagos IPAC Faults LASIEC Over Lack of Transparency in 2025 LG Election Guidelines
Lagos State’s chapter of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has strongly criticized the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) over its release of the 2025 local government election guidelines.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a joint statement released on Saturday, IPAC Chairperson Emilade Akinade and the Council’s Public Relations Officer, George Ashiru, accused LASIEC of failing to observe proper consultation and communication protocols before publishing the election timetable.
Recall that LASIEC recently announced July 12, 2025, as the date for the conduct of elections across the state’s 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas (LCDAs).
However, IPAC expressed dismay that LASIEC unveiled the election guidelines without adequately engaging the 19 registered political parties in the state. The council alleged that the electoral body has been operating in secrecy, leaving vital questions unanswered—particularly on the Supreme Court’s interpretation of local government autonomy and how it impacts the 37 LCDAs created by the state.
The Council also disclosed that it only recently became aware of a revised LASIEC law—reportedly signed by the governor on January 10—which grants LASIEC authority to conduct elections into the 57 LG/LCDAs. IPAC noted with concern that this legislation was neither made public nor shared with political parties for review.
Furthermore, the newly constituted LASIEC board, led by retired Justice Mobolanle Okikiolu-Ighile, came under fire for not fostering an inclusive or transparent electoral process. IPAC revealed that since January, the board had only convened one meeting with political party stakeholders—and that was initiated by IPAC itself.
The advisory council stressed the importance of consistent stakeholder engagement, particularly when new electoral laws are introduced. It urged LASIEC to learn from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos, which it praised for maintaining open lines of communication.
IPAC concluded by warning that the continuous late release of election guidelines and lack of engagement could lead to misinterpretation of LASIEC’s intentions—potentially undermining the credibility and fairness of the upcoming elections.
