The tragic incident, caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), claimed the lives of eight individuals and left 21 others injured on Saturday. The explosion targeted civilian vehicles traveling the busy route.

According to reports, 14 of the injured victims suffered severe injuries, while seven sustained minor wounds and are currently receiving medical care at the State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri.

During a visit to the hospital, Governor Zulum expressed deep sorrow over the attack, particularly noting that Borno had experienced over a year of respite from IED-related incidents.

“This is truly unfortunate. We’ve not had an IED explosion in more than a year,” Zulum remarked. He also mentioned that the affected road had been closed for about a month before the attack.

The governor extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and called on the Nigerian military and other security agencies to intensify surveillance and patrols on the highway to prevent further tragedies.

He also emphasized his administration’s commitment to bolstering local security mechanisms, particularly by supporting the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and community youth volunteers actively involved in counter-insurgency efforts.

Additionally, Zulum referenced a recent meeting with military leadership in Abuja, where the resurgence of Boko Haram in Borno was discussed in detail. He expressed optimism about the outcome of the meeting, noting that assurances were given by the service chiefs to contain the threat.

“Our conversations with the military chiefs were constructive. We raised concerns about the renewed Boko Haram activities, and they pledged their full support to address the situation,” he said.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has revealed that the governing body is exploring the possibility of expanding the 2030 World Cup to include 64 teams. This potential shift follows the recent expansion from 32 to 48 teams for the 2026 tournament, which increased the match count to 104. Infantino advocates for this change to provide smaller footballing nations with greater opportunities to qualify, arguing that increased representation motivates countries to invest in their local leagues, academies, and national programs. While the proposal remains subject to approval by FIFA’s decision-making bodies, it aims to narrow the competitive gap between traditional powerhouses and emerging teams. Building on the success of the 48-team format introduced for 2026, Infantino believes that giving more countries a seat at the table is essential for the global development of the sport. He noted that under the current expanded format, teams from all continents have proven their competitiveness, suggesting that the divide between established nations and newcomers is shrinking. If approved, this 64-team structure would be implemented for a historic tournament already set to span three continents and six host nations to celebrate the competition’s 100th anniversary. FIFA is currently evaluating the logistical and financial implications of such an expansion before making a final decision.
