Dalung Links Boko Haram Offensive to Rising Banditry, Kidnapping Across Nigeria
Solomon Dalung, former Minister of Sports and senior member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has attributed the growing wave of insecurity in Nigeria to the military campaign against Boko Haram insurgents in the north-east. Speaking on Politics HQ, a programme aired on News Central, Dalung alleged that the dispersal of Boko Haram fighters has led to the rise of banditry and kidnappings in the north-west, Plateau, and other parts of the country.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
He argued that what began as a localized security threat has now transformed into a structured criminal operation, with kidnapping for ransom evolving into what he described as a “political economy.”
Dalung also highlighted a darker dimension to the violence—land grabs driven by the presence of mineral resources. “This is a genocidal elimination of native communities to seize their mineral-rich lands,” he said, further claiming that well-connected sponsors are behind the continued violence, driven by vested interests in natural resources.
He criticized the government for neglecting regions such as Plateau State, a historically mineral-rich zone, and accused authorities of concealing the identities of those backing these armed groups. Dalung referenced confessions from criminal suspects during interrogations, where they disclosed being exploited by their sponsors.
In a specific instance, Dalung recalled a suspect admitting during a broadcast that out of ₦100 million received as ransom, only ₦200,000 was given to him—the rest allegedly pocketed by sponsors.
He emphasized the need for transparency and accountability, warning that failure to expose the real enablers of insecurity would only deepen the crisis.
