SERAP Gives FG, NBC 48 Hours To Lift Ban On Eedris Abdulkareem’s Protest Song
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Federal Government and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), demanding the immediate reversal of the ban on Eedris Abdulkareem’s protest song titled “Tell Your Papa.”....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement shared on its X platform on Thursday, SERAP strongly criticized the ban, describing it as a breach of the artist’s constitutional right to freedom of expression. The organization warned that it would pursue legal action if the ban is not lifted within the given timeframe.
According to SERAP, the administration of President Bola Tinubu must reverse the NBC’s decision, which prevents Nigerian radio and television stations from airing the song. The group maintained that failure to comply would result in court proceedings.
The NBC’s directive was communicated through a memo dated April 9, 2025, and signed by Susan Obi, the Coordinating Director of Broadcast Monitoring. The commission categorized the song as “Not To Be Broadcast” (NTBB), citing provisions in Section 3.1.8 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, which prohibits the dissemination of content considered offensive or indecent.
The memo, titled “Restriction on broadcasting ‘Tell Your Papa’ by Eedris Abdulkareem,” indicated that the song’s content was found unsuitable for public broadcast due to its critical tone.
Eedris Abdulkareem, widely recognized for his music addressing political and social issues in Nigeria, uses “Tell Your Papa” to highlight the nation’s current economic difficulties and governance concerns. The song has been trending on social media, drawing public attention.
The NBC urged all broadcasters to comply with the ban in line with responsible media conduct. However, SERAP insists that the directive is an attack on artistic freedom and democratic principles, urging an immediate retraction.
