EFCC Witness Reveals Former Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed Did Not Repay ₦1 Billion Loan
A prosecution witness for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has told the Kwara State High Court that former Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed failed to repay a ₦1 billion loan obtained from the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Lanre Daibu, former chairman of Kwara SUBEB, disclosed this while testifying before Justice Mahmud Abdulgafar. He is the fourth witness in the ongoing trial involving Ahmed and the ex-commissioner for finance, Ademola Banu. Both face 14 charges related to the alleged misappropriation of ₦5.78 billion in public funds.
Daibu explained that the ₦1 billion was drawn from the 2013 Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) matching grant to settle salary arrears and pension obligations in January 2015. He noted that despite assurances to repay the loan within one or two months, the state government failed to refund the money before SUBEB was dissolved.
He stated that Banu had initially requested the loan over the phone, prompting him to demand a written request for transparency. According to Daibu, the signed letter promised repayment within two months, a commitment that was never fulfilled.
Daibu expressed hesitancy in approving the loan, highlighting that UBEC grants are designated strictly for specific educational projects under the Action Plan, not for government borrowing.
Also testifying was Benjamin Sehinde Fatigun, a retired permanent secretary in the Kwara State Ministry of Finance, who confirmed that Ahmed authorized the ₦1 billion loan to cover salary payments. He said the funds were moved to the government’s salary account based on a request and recommendation from the finance ministry.
The case has been adjourned to April 11, 2025, for continuation of the trial.

Atiku Opens Up On ADC 2027 Game Plan, Says Consensus Candidate Comes First.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will first pursue a consensus arrangement before considering a primary election for its 2027 presidential ticket.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday while discussing the party’s leadership and strategy ahead of the next general election.
He said he is open to backing a consensus candidate if that becomes the party’s collective decision, stressing that such support should not be interpreted as stepping aside.
“It is not about stepping aside, but whether I am willing to support, and yes, I will,” Atiku said.
According to him, the ADC’s first priority is to build internal unity and reach an agreement among stakeholders before considering a competitive primary process.
“Our first option will be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t happen, then of course we will explore other options. And yes, I will support whoever eventually emerges,” he stated.
Atiku also expressed confidence in the political experience within the party, saying he believes a consensus is achievable and may make a full-scale primary contest unnecessary.
“That remains our preferred path. We will go for primaries if consensus fails, but I honestly do not expect it to get to that stage because we are dealing with mature and experienced politicians,” he added.
His comments come amid growing political consultations and coalition talks as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
