Ijaw Elders and Youths Back INEC’s Ward Delineation Efforts at Abuja Rally
Scores of Ijaw elders and youths staged a solidarity rally at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, April 10, 2025, in support of the recent ward delineation exercise in the Warri Federal Constituency. The exercise was mandated by a 2022 Supreme Court ruling and involved the three local government areas of Warri North, Warri South, and Warri South-West.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The Ijaw stakeholders, representing Gbaramatu, Egbema, Diebiri, and Isaba communities, expressed their endorsement of the ward delineation, calling it a thorough and fair process. They commended INEC for its diligent approach, contrasting it with protests from the Itsekiri community regarding the results of the exercise.
In an address to journalists, Chief David Reje, a spokesman for the Ijaw Kingdoms, praised INEC’s commitment to upholding the rule of law by adhering to the Supreme Court’s judgment. He emphasized that INEC had engaged all ethnic groups in the constituency—Ijaw, Itsekiri, and Urhobo—through consultations with leaders and traditional rulers before commencing the delineation.
Reje also expressed surprise at the opposition from some Itsekiri factions, noting that the ward delineation was conducted transparently and with full involvement from all stakeholders. He further asserted that the Ijaws, long marginalized politically, had now achieved a level of political freedom and self-determination.
Top INEC officials, including National Commissioners Professor Abdullahi Zuru and Mallam Mohammed Haruna, welcomed the protesters and acknowledged their support. Zuru assured them that the Commission would continue to uphold democratic principles and ensure the correct implementation of electoral processes.
Former President of the Gbaramatu Youths Council, Christopher Wuruyai, also praised the exercise, calling it a fair reflection of the constituency’s ethnic composition and an end to decades of political injustice.
The ward delineation process included the creation of 18 wards in Warri North LGA, with Ijaws holding 10 wards and Itsekiris 8. Warri South-West LGA was divided into 19 wards, with the Ijaw community holding 14, while the Itsekiri controlled 5. Warri South LGA features 20 wards, distributed among Ijaw, Itsekiri, and Urhobo ethnic groups. The revised political structure was presented to stakeholders in Asaba on April 5, 2025.
