Human Rights Watch Calls for Respect to Traditional Rulers in Wake of Emir Sanusi’s Controversial Invitation
The Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Youth Empowerment Foundation (YEF) have urged the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to ensure that police actions do not undermine the dignity of Nigeria’s traditional institutions. This call follows a recent incident where the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) withdrew an invitation extended to the Emir of Kano, His Highness Mallam Muhammadu Sanusi II, in connection with a situation arising during the March 30, 2025 Sallah celebration.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In an open letter addressed to the IGP and dated April 7, 2025, HRW expressed concern over the handling of the matter, particularly the manner in which the Emir was addressed in official communications. The letter emphasized the importance of maintaining proper protocol when interacting with traditional rulers, warning that any failure to do so could be seen as an affront to not just the individual Emir but the entire institution of traditional leadership.
HRW stressed that traditional rulers should always be addressed with the appropriate titles, such as “Emir” or “His Highness,” regardless of their status—whether they are alive, deposed, or deceased. Furthermore, the letter questioned the necessity of involving the Emir directly in the investigation, given that the Kano State Police Command had already made arrests and invited Sallaman Kano, the senior palace aide, to assist.
HRW commended the IGP for swiftly withdrawing the invitation but urged the police to ensure that such matters are handled with the utmost professionalism, avoiding any actions that could politicize or disrespect the traditional institutions. The letter concluded with a call for greater care in dealing with traditional leaders to preserve both the rule of law and Nigeria’s cultural heritage.
