According to sources, the boat was traveling from Bille in Degema LGA to Port Harcourt when it was intercepted near the Cawthorne Channel by armed assailants, who forcibly took five passengers to an undisclosed location.
The incident has been confirmed by Isreal Pepple, Chairman of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (Port Harcourt Commercial District), who stated that the matter had been formally reported to the police. “We have informed the authorities, but there has been no update so far. We urge for the safe and unconditional release of the abducted individuals and call for improved security on our waterways,” he said.
In a related update, the Executive Director of the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC), Fyneface Dumnamene, revealed that one of the boat’s passengers—an elderly woman suffering from health issues—was released after pleading with the abductors. The boat driver was also freed to facilitate her transportation to Port Harcourt for medical care.
Dumnamene noted that six people were aboard the vessel during the incident, but only the woman and the driver were spared. The five kidnapped victims are all residents of the Bille Kingdom.
As of the time of this report, the Rivers State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement regarding the attack.
