This initiative is part of the UNIDO Project 210184, “Promoting Sustainable Plastic Value Chains through Circular Economy Practices,” which is funded by the Government of Japan. The project focuses on building Nigeria’s capacity for sustainable industrial development by tackling plastic pollution at its source.

According to a statement from Mrs. Folashade Kadiri, Director of Public Affairs at LAWMA, the initiative will see the creation of four waste collection centers and 30 designated collection points across the Lekki and Lagos Mainland municipalities. LAWMA will provide the land and infrastructure, while UNIDO and FBRA will co-finance development and lead public awareness campaigns.

LAWMA’s Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, revealed that the project will be executed on two land parcels in Lekki and Lagos Mainland, which have already been secured. He added that LAWMA is exploring an innovative approach by potentially integrating educational facilities alongside the recycling hubs to foster environmental awareness.

Dr. Osuji Otu, UNIDO’s National Programme Officer, emphasized the project’s potential for national replication, with the goal of using the successful pilot in Lagos and Abuja as a model for the rest of Nigeria. He encouraged other government agencies to support such initiatives to address the global challenge of plastic pollution.

The project, set to run until September 2026, will be overseen by a cooperation committee comprising representatives from LAWMA, UNIDO, and FBRA. The committee will monitor progress and manage partnerships with private sector recycling companies. FBRA will lead the community awareness campaigns in Lagos under the initiative. Both LAWMA and FBRA have expressed their commitment to continue the collaboration beyond the project’s completion to ensure long-term environmental impact.

A Strong Endorsement for Donald Duke

  • Surpassing Competitors: Speaking during an interview, Baba-Ahmed confidently stated that, candidate for candidate, Donald Duke outperforms all other presidential contenders currently in the political space.

  • Integrity and Capability: He described Duke as part of a visionary leadership blueprint aimed at thinking critically, restoring national dignity, exhibiting true integrity, and offering young Nigerians a leadership style they can genuinely look up to.

The Strategic Push for an Opposition Coalition

Despite possessing what he considers the superior candidate, Baba-Ahmed explained why the party is actively championing a broader political alliance:

  • Consensus Over Ego: The PRP chairman emphasized that the party’s push for a mega-coalition is driven by consensus and constitutional processes rather than forcing Duke’s candidacy through on profile strength alone.

  • Defeating Fault Lines: Framing the 2027 election as a critical turning point for the nation, Baba-Ahmed noted that the stakes go far beyond individual party ambitions. The coalition aims to unite likeminded opposition forces to rescue Nigeria from its current trajectory and bridge its deep fault lines.
