Plateau Governor Condemns Bokkos Killings as Genocide, Demands Justice
Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, has strongly condemned the recent wave of violence in Bokkos Local Government Area, describing it as a deliberate act of genocide. He asserts that the attacks were orchestrated to displace communities from their ancestral lands and plunge them into poverty.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking on Arise News on Monday, Governor Mutfwang labeled the killings, which occurred over the past two weeks, as targeted assaults on vulnerable populations, emphasizing that they were not politically driven but part of a familiar and disturbing trend tied to the farming calendar.
“I say this without reservation — the events in Bokkos over the last two weeks constitute genocide. This is not a politically motivated incident,” he said.
According to him, similar attacks have repeatedly occurred at the start of farming seasons, with another wave usually resurfacing around harvest time. This cyclical pattern, he claims, points to a coordinated strategy to keep the people in economic distress and seize their land.
Despite the dire situation, Mutfwang expressed resolve to address the crisis. He stated that his administration would intensify efforts to secure the region, explore better strategies, and ensure perpetrators face justice. He also acknowledged recent arrests and said suspects are already providing valuable information to security agencies.
“We will not be defeated. Though frustrated, we are committed to finding solutions and will not let this go unanswered,” he affirmed.
While there are currently no immediate compensation plans, the governor expressed intent to engage with federal agencies and humanitarian organizations to support victims. He also highlighted the pressing issue of illegal arms circulating across Nigeria, blaming the country’s porous borders for enabling the influx of weapons into the wrong hands.
“To prevent future tragedies like Bokkos, addressing arms proliferation must be a national priority,” he warned.
Governor Mutfwang reiterated his administration’s commitment to sustaining peace and development in Plateau State, stating that although the attacks in Bokkos are a setback, they will not derail the progress made over the past year.
“Peace had returned to Plateau and this breach is a blow, but we will recover and move forward stronger,” he concluded.
