Olubadan Invalidates Sarkin Sasa Title, Upholds Baale’s Authority in Akinyele

This position was made clear during the Olubadan-in-Council meeting held on Monday at the Olubadan Palace, Oke Aremo, Ibadan.
The development comes amid rising tensions following the passing of the former Sarkin Sasa, who also served as Chairman of the Arewa Traditional Rulers Council across 17 Southern states. In a swift move to fill the leadership gap, his son, Ahmed Haruna (Ciroma), was chosen by both the family and the traditional northern councils to succeed him—without the approval of the Olubadan.
In reaction, Oba Olakulehin stressed that the procedure for the appointment of a new leader in Sasa was not in accordance with traditional norms and remains unrecognized by the Ibadan monarchy.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Gbenga Ayoade, the Olubadan affirmed that Chief Akinade Ajani Amusa is the officially recognized Baale of Sasa land and the accredited representative of the Olubadan within the Akinyele Local Government Area.
The monarch further warned that all residents and groups in Sasa must respect the Baale’s authority. Any efforts to undermine or bypass the Baale’s leadership would attract severe consequences, which would be treated as a direct challenge to the Olubadan’s authority.
“It must be clearly understood that everyone in Sasa is under the jurisdiction of Baale Akinade Ajani. Disobedience to his directives will not be tolerated and will be seen as a disrespect to the Olubadan stool,” the statement concluded.
