LP Caucus to Abure: “We’re Not Running a Ponzi Scheme” – Reps Reject Ogene’s Removal

Published

on

The Labour Party (LP) caucus in the House of Representatives has denounced the reported replacement of its caucus leader, Hon. Afam Ogene, by former national chairman Julius Abure, describing the move as “naive, laughable, and misleading.”....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

This rebuttal comes shortly after the caucus expressed support for last week’s Supreme Court ruling that effectively ended Abure’s tenure and affirmed their commitment to work with the party’s National Caretaker Committee led by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman.

Abure, in a counteraction, had declared the removal of Ogene as the LP caucus leader in the House. However, the caucus responded on Tuesday, firmly stating that the role of a caucus leader is neither appointed nor dictated—it is earned through election by fellow legislators.

According to the statement, Hon. Afam Ogene was duly elected as leader by 21 out of 31 voting members of the 35-member Labour Party caucus on May 6, 2023. The election was supervised by three abstaining members—Hon. Okey-Joe Onuakalusi, Hon. Obi Aguocha, and Prof. Lilian Oby Orogbu—who were in charge of organizing the process. Therefore, the caucus insists, only its members hold the authority to remove Ogene, not Abure, whom they referred to as “a power-hungry individual entangled in unresolved corruption allegations.”

The statement suggests that Abure’s actions may be retaliation against the caucus for backing the Supreme Court’s verdict. The members reiterated their support for the party’s direction under leaders like Mr. Peter Obi and Governor Alex Otti, ahead of a crucial stakeholders’ meeting scheduled for April 9.

The caucus further criticized Abure’s leadership style, branding it as transactional and damaging to the party’s credibility. They accused him of prioritizing money and power over party integrity, pointing to controversial incidents in states such as Edo, Ebonyi, Plateau, and Anambra, where Abure has faced various allegations of financial impropriety and misconduct.

The lawmakers also challenged Abure to publicly address his unresolved disputes with key stakeholders across multiple states, including Kenneth Imasuagbon in Edo and Eze Oko Splendour in Ebonyi, as well as the chaotic Anambra gubernatorial primaries.

In a stinging remark, the caucus expressed concern that Abure, who has allegedly failed to account for hundreds of millions of naira generated from the 2023 elections, is now targeting the caucus’s funds. They stressed that only the caucus has authority over its finances, and no resources will be released under Abure’s influence until he clears himself of the allegations made by former party treasurer, Oluchi Oparah.

The statement concluded with a strong call for accountability and renewal in the Labour Party, stating that the time has come for leadership that inspires confidence, transparency, and unity.
